SkyHive FAQ

Who Is SkyHive?

SkyHive is a Certified B Corporation that uses AI to drive global reskilling initiatives and create a more inclusive labor economy. Our products are designed to rapidly reskill people and help organizations and communities prepare for the future of work.

How’s SkyHive different?

SkyHive’s groundbreaking, patented invention decoding human capability is the only technology in the world that can:

- Automate your talent architecture.
- Automate and normalize your job taxonomies and skill ontologies across all of your people technologies.
- Integrate with your core HR systems like Workday, Microsoft, and SAP to ensure a) that you are getting more value out of your existing technology investments, and b) that you do not require your employees to use yet another technology.
- Provide you with a “Human Capital Operating System” that drives ongoing and real-time value to your entire HR technology stack.
- Be a “decoder ring” that provides you with real-time, streamed visibility into the changes happening outside of your organization as well as inside of your organization.
- Provide you automated real-time labor market intelligence at the most granular level available in the world.

Our customers will tell you that SkyHive is the world’s most advanced technology to support you with answering four primary questions (along with a lot more)

1. What are the skills of my workforce today (at an individual, departmental, company, or community-wide level).
2. What are the jobs and skills emerging in the external labor market at a market, industry, or competitive level and how will this impact my workforce now and into the future?
3. What are the gaps?
4. How can we leverage our existing training and development initiatives and technologies to fill those gaps through reskilling our workforce at pace and at scale?

Each of these represents millions of dollars in annual savings and time-to-value is weeks, not months or years.

You have this huge amount of data. Where does it come from?

SkyHive has the world’s most comprehensive real-time global skills data set in human capital management. This public data is sourced daily globally across different languages.

SkyHive uses web scraping, APIs (paid and non-paid), manual data collection via proprietary apps, and many paid data sources. We strictly adhere to all data acquisition protocols. Some of these include conforming to:

- Robots Exclusion Standard; the robots.txt file indicates the web-crawling software where it is allowed (or not allowed) within the website. This is part of the Robots Exclusion Protocol (REP), a group of web standards created to regulate how robots crawl the web.
- Adhering to terms and conditions set on the sites
- Adding a User-Agent string with our information, so they will be able to see it is from SkyHive
- Agreements with the source producing the data scrape to create new value from the data and not duplicate it
- Scrapers designed not to burden and cause site performance issues.

The data is stored in an AES 256 encrypted database with restricted access.

The following are the data source types:

- Job Boards
- Aggregators
- Resumes
- Course Outlines
- Census Data
- Patents
- Company Data
- Compensation Data
- Cost of Living
- Annual Reports
- White Papers
- Subject Matter Expertise

What is this Skill Passport you have talked about?

The Skill Passport™ allows individuals to understand the skills they have, the skills they’ll need, and how to bridge the gaps.

It opens new pathways for individuals far beyond what would have been available traditionally. Additionally, it provides a complete visualization of an individual’s reskilling journey and maps out the training to be undertaken.

Based on the skills gaps identified, SkyHive finds learning and development options that cover the skills required for career progression or transition.

Using SkyHive’s engine, SkyHive automatically recommends job opportunities and matches relevant skills to the skills profile. The streamlined job matching process allows individuals to look beyond their conventional career path and save a significant amount of time by targeting key skills.

For enterprise leaders, it helps eliminate bias and look past the traditional job title by determining the precise skill match between a candidate and an open position.
For government leaders, it fosters community resilience and economic empowerment by helping individuals better understand the skills they have, the skills they’ll need, and the optimal pathway to remain relevant and competitive—regardless of their previous job title.
For skill developers and educators, it promotes the development of specific skills needed, helps individuals better understand the optimal pathways to reaching their future goals, and connects them to available job opportunities along the way.

We have a lot of work technology. We can barely adopt and integrate what we have. Why do I need more?

After spending millions of dollars on HR technologies, and countless years trying to integrate them, organizations find that the systems don’t talk to each other and aren’t providing the valuable data they need. The systems operate in siloes—there is no unifying language. So, people are redeployed who could have been hired internally. Projects are sent to temp agencies that could have been done in house. Pay is set without a sense ofwhat skills will be most valuable in the coming years. Promotions and performance management are haphazard, and biased. Past job applicants are ignored.

SkyHive changes all of this. It provides a single, unifying, view of skills, built from the ground up. This unlocks valuable data from all of your current systems. It helps harmonize the information flowing in and out of your systems. Basically, it helps them all speak the same language. The operating system helps break down your siloes.

So, before laying someone off, you can see how their skills translate into jobs that are open in your company. Before going to a temp agency, you can see who has the skills internally. Hiring and promotions happen based on skills, not who knows who. You can see how forgotten past applicants and their skills can be hired for jobs you now have open.

What is Quantum Labor Analysis®?

It represents a quantum leap in our understanding of the very fabric of the economy, and fundamentally transforms how we work, learn, and live.

What is the difference between all these words thrown around ... skills, knowledge, competencies, and experience?

The short answer is that SkyHive's technology takes all of these into account when providing its intelligence. Read more in this blog post.

I’m nervous about AI. Do you do anything to make sure it’s ethical?

The ethics of AI is a topic of great interest to SkyHive; we’re working with the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Institute and the GPAI and recently won the RAISE Award for exhibiting best practices in responsible AI.

To support our commitment to ethical AI, we have invested in an enterprise ethical AI policy and framework and have benchmarked itself against leading privacy and ethical AI legislation and standards.

SkyHive’s Ethical AI Principles and Policy

To promote responsible AI practices, SkyHive has adopted a set of ethical AI principles and a corresponding policy that provides guidance for data users and AI practitioners.

Ethical AI Principles

SkyHive has adopted ethical AI principles at the organizational level to shape the company’s culture of responsibility and support its goal of being a leader in responsible AI. The image illustrates SkyHive’s guiding principles, which are aligned to the pillars of compliance and ethical data practices, ethical design and responsible deployment, accountability, safety, trust, and transparency.

Ethical AI Policy

To ensure that SkyHive’s ethical AI principles are consistently applied in day-to-day operations, the company has developed a policy that outlines its approach to ethical AI and sets standards for development and use of AI systems. The policy provides guidelines for practitioners to follow across the model development process, covering key areas such as transparency, explainability, robustness, trust, confidentiality, and accountability. The policy applies to all SkyHive staff, contractors, and third parties involved in core business operations and is aligned with SkyHive’s ongoing commitment to advancing efficient and effective privacy and data management practices.

A Framework to Operationalize Responsible AI at SkyHive

To effectively implement the principles outlined in SkyHive’s ethical AI policy, the company has established an enterprise framework called MIDAS+. This framework certifies the use of data and AI models across theorganization and ensures a consistent governance process. The MIDAS+ framework centers on the pillars of accuracy, consistency, quality, and ethics.

Privacy Maturity Assessment

SkyHive recently conducted a privacy maturity assessment to evaluate its privacy program, strategic alignment, and corporate culture against industrystandards and legal requirements, including Canadian privacy legislation and the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). As part of the assessment, stakeholders from across the company were interviewed to assess privacy practices and determine the effectiveness of SkyHive’s enterprise policies. The assessment covered a range of criteria including privacy governance, privacy program controls, personal information security, fair and lawful processing, privacy by design, privacy enhancing techniques, and data rights. These criteria were ranked on a scale between ad-hoc to optimized, and specific steps were identified and prioritized to help SkyHive improve its privacy practices going forward.

Ethical and Legal Criteria to Demonstrate Responsible AI

SkyHive has recently evaluated its responsible AI practices against emerging AI standards and legislation, including the US Algorithmic Accountability Act, NIST and ISO/IEC standards, the EU AI Act, and Canada’s Artificial Intelligence and Data Act. As part of this evaluation, specific activities and requirements were identified across stages of model lifecycle to ensure compliance with emerging standards and regulations. These requirements were documented and continue to influence enhancements to SkyHive’s AI practices and MIDAS+ framework.
