Sean Hinton Selected for the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI)

Sean Hinton, Founder & CEO of SkyHive, has been selected to represent Canada in the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), one of the most extensive collaborations on AI policy and the first international standard for AI.

GPAI is an international initiative created by France and Canada during their G7 presidencies along with thirteen other members including Australia, the European Union, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

The global partnership will guide the responsible development and use of AI in respect to human rights, inclusion, diversity, innovation, and economic growth to coincide with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

With the objective to bridge the gap between theory and practice on AI policy, member countries will lend their support to cutting-edge research and practical implementation activities connected with AI priorities. Experts from industry, government, civil society, and academia will conduct research and pilot projects.

GPAI working groups will collaborate across four key themes:

  1. Responsible AI
  2. Data Governance
  3. Future of Work
  4. Innovation and Commercialization

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will host the Secretariat of GPAI in Paris with two Centres of Expertise in Montreal and Paris. The relationship with the OECD will bring alignment between GPAI’s research and practical implementation and international policy development.

“These are critical conversations that need to happen at a global scale,” said Sean Hinton. “Artificial intelligence is advancing at a remarkable pace. It brings many advances to society but also carries many challenges from privacy, security, ethical issues, to digital divides. There is a need to establish trust in these algorithms and harness the opportunities AI presents in a way that delivers the best outcome for all.  At SkyHive, we pride ourselves on upholding and leading the ethical use of AI and supporting the responsible development of this technology.”

GPAI is an important convergence of leadership, research, and policy. To govern the ethical use of AI, guidelines must be designed and developed in a way that aligns and upholds the values and ethics of societies and communities. AI will affect everyone in some way or another, therefore initiatives like GPAI are essential for the betterment of society.
